Sobig.E is a classic mass-mailing network worm that originally emerged in mid-2003. It propagates by harvesting email addresses from infected machines and sending out spoofed messages containing malicious attachments, such as your_details.pif or application.pif. If clicked, the worm drops a malicious file named winssk32.exe into the Windows system directory.
Because Sobig.E is a decades-old legacy threat, specialized, standalone “Sobig-only” removal tools from the early 2000s are largely discontinued. However, modern on-demand security scanners and tools easily crush this malware instantly due to universally updated signature databases.
