Video Capture to MP4 Made Easy: A Step-by-Step Tutorial Capturing your screen or external video feed directly to an MP4 format saves time and preserves quality. MP4 is the universal standard for video because it offers excellent compression without sacrificing clarity, making your files easy to share, edit, and play on any device. Whether you are recording a software demo, a presentation, or a gameplay session, this step-by-step tutorial will show you how to capture video directly to MP4 using free, open-source software. Step 1: Download and Install OBS Studio
While many screen recorders exist, OBS Studio (Open Broadcaster Software) is the industry standard for both windows and Mac. It is completely free, contains no watermarks, and allows direct MP4 recording. Go to the official OBS Studio website.
Download the installer matching your operating system (Windows, Mac, or Linux).
Run the installer and follow the standard on-screen prompts to complete the installation. Step 2: Configure Your Output Settings for MP4
By default, OBS may save files in MKV format. Follow these steps to change your default recording format to MP4: Open OBS Studio.
Click on Settings in the bottom right corner of the control panel. Select the Output tab from the left-hand menu. Locate the Recording section. Find the drop-down menu labeled Recording Format. Select MP4 from the list. Click Apply and then OK to save your changes. Step 3: Set Up Your Video and Audio Sources
Before hitting record, you must tell the software exactly what you want to capture. Look at the Sources box at the bottom of the screen. Click the + (plus) icon to add a new source.
Select Display Capture if you want to record your entire screen, or Video Capture Device if you want to record a webcam or an external capture card. Give the source a name and click OK. Verify the preview window displays your intended content.
Check the Audio Mixer dock to ensure your microphone or desktop audio bars move when sound plays. Step 4: Start and Stop the Recording
With your settings configured and your sources active, you are ready to record.
Click the Start Recording button in the bottom right Controls dock. Minimize OBS and perform the actions you want to capture.
Once finished, bring the OBS window back up and click Stop Recording. Step 5: Locate and Verify Your MP4 File Your video is now saved and ready for use. Click on File in the top left menu bar of OBS. Select Show Recordings from the drop-down menu.
A file explorer window will open instantly, highlighted with your brand-new MP4 video file.
Double-click the file to play it back and check your audio and video quality.
